Bennett Questions Role of Some of Obama Administration's Czars

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Bob Bennett (R-Utah), a member of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, raised serious questions today about whether czars within the Executive Office of the President are diluting the role of cabinet secretaries, who are confirmed in the Senate and are subject to congressional oversight, in shaping public policy.

"The vague duties of these czars leaves a very urgent question unanswered of who is driving policy in this country," questioned Bennett. "Is it the czars or the cabinet secretaries who are calling the shots? We are facing critical moments in shaping legislation that will have an impact on generations to come, and to leave blurred lines in management is completely dangerous and foolish."

Bennett's comments came during a Homeland Security committee hearing examining the role of czars in the Executive Office. During the hearing, Bennett explained that not all czar positions are unnecessary and clarified his stance on why he supported a Y2K czar, saying it was timely, necessary, and when the issue was no longer relevant, the czar position was dissolved, unlike the current czar positions that have been created.
