WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Bob Bennett (R-Utah) issued the following statement this evening regarding the vote to proceed to the Senate Democrats' health care plan:
"Tonight's vote was a tough hit for every American that wants our health care system fixed. After months of receiving strong opposition to a government takeover of health care, Senate Democrats chose to ignore those concerns.
"Apparently, the Democrats have misread the diagnosis on our health care system. The point of reforming health care was to drive down the escalating costs. Why then would the Senate Democrats and the administration go behind closed doors for six weeks without any Republican input and draft a 2,074 page bill that increases cost and expands government spending by $2.5 trillion over a decade?
"Tonight's vote wasn't a vote for reform. Those who voted to proceed to this bill voted to raise premiums, raise taxes, cut benefits to Medicare, and inflate the national debt. Tonight's vote was a vote to further burden state budgets by implementing the largest expansion of Medicaid. Tonight's vote was a vote in favor of putting Washington bureaucrats between doctors and patients.
"I am outraged and discouraged that 60 Members of Congress voted to proceed to this bill. This is a far cry from the reform that Americans want, and I will work to defeat this bill so we can start anew with one that truly brings down costs and reforms our broken system."
